How Do I Become an Egg Donor?

By The Genesis Group Egg Donation

Donations empower loving parents to build the family of their dreams through IVF treatments, donation cycles, and family-building journeys for those who may be experiencing infertility, health challenges, or simply require a donor egg.

At The Genesis Group, we match egg donors to known intended parents for single-cycle journeys, based entirely around your unique needs for a safe and comfortable journey. You will always know where and to whom your donation is going, and you will match on your terms.

Our donors are valued with emotional care, customized compensation, and zero judgment. Here’s how you can start your egg donation journey with The Genesis Group, or any trusted agency of your choosing.

Basic Egg Donation Qualifications

Our requirements (and that of any trusted agency) are based around the restrictions of the clinics with which we partner. Clinics often set strict requirements, especially for egg donors, to limit risks and ensure as safe, successful, and supported a journey as possible.

These standards ensure donor health and safety. To be eligible, you generally need to meet the following:

  1. You are between the ages 21-29 and are a non-smoker, or you are a previous donor.

Why? Women and people with ovaries’ fertility typically drops after age 30, and decreases sharply again at 35. Since egg donation both requires medical technologies and is intended for another party, approving donors based on age or previous donation success limits a very common fertility risk factor.

  2. You are currently enrolled in or have completed university.

Why? Our mission is to facilitate safe, ethical, and rewarding fertility journeys for both intended parents and egg donors alike. Intended parents are making a very important decision — the donor which will contribute genetic material for their future child — based on limited interaction and information. They often look for donors that have similar characteristics to themselves, so that they can see themselves represented in their child.

With such limited information, education can play an important role in connecting with and selecting an egg donor. Donors who are not currently enrolled in or have not graduated from university are matched at a much lower rate, and we want to ensure that donors who are accepted to our program can see their desire to become an egg donor fulfilled.

  3. You have a BMI within a safe range (IVF clinic requirement)

During your egg donation cycle and retrieval, you will take a series of oral and self-injected medications. You can learn more about each medication and why you take it through our Guide to Egg Donation and Fertility Medications.

In order to limit side-effects and potential risks of taking multiple follicle stimulation, egg maturing, and cycle regulation medications, IVF clinics limit potential egg donors’ BMI to a safe range (typically between 21-29).

  4. Your family has a strong health history and medical background

To become an egg donor, you’ll complete a genetic consultation as part of your screening process. An understanding of your family health history through both maternal and paternal grandparents allows intended parents to gain a better understanding of your background. Additionally, it can highlight potential genetic incompatibilities beforehand.

  5. You have typical, regular menstrual cycles

Your egg donation medications will interact with and affect your typical cycle, and irregularities can create complications with the cycle timeline or exacerbate potential risks. It’s crucial that egg donors have regular, predictable menstrual cycles to build an effective egg donation calendar and set a retrieval date.

  6. You do not use or are willing to pause any implant-based birth control

Clinics will often prescribe birth control as part of your cycle calendar to predict your menstrual cycle and build a medication and retrieval calendar around it. You will need to refrain from birth control or remove any implant for at least three months before starting your egg donation cycle.

Application & Initial Interview

If you meet our basic requirements, complete our quick, five-minute online application here

Following your application, you will be prompted to make an account on our secure database, Orchid, and begin filling out your profile.

Your profile includes the following details for intended parents:

  • Photos

  • Family background and health history (through grandparents)

  • Personality questions

  • Requested compensation and matching preferences

  • Travel restrictions

  • Other important information

We’ll follow up and schedule a more in-depth consultation to walk you through the process, address your questions, and ensure you feel 100% comfortable moving forward.

Your Published Profile and Matching Process

Once you’re accepted and have completed every step on your profile, it will become available to intended parents. You determine what information is shared, and you’ll only be recommended for matching with someone who’s a good fit for you.

You will meet with your potential match via your preferred line of communication, and ultimately the decision to move forward lies in your hands.

Psychological, Genetic, & Medical Screening

After matching, you’ll complete:

  • A psychological evaluation, often using standardized tools like the PAI or MMPI.

  • A genetic consultation to review family history and discuss potential hereditary concerns.

Additionally, Your health is paramount. You’ll visit the clinic for:

  • Physical exam and transvaginal ultrasound

  • Bloodwork including genetic carrier and infection screenings

This ensures your body is physically ready and safely optimized for donation.

We’ve detailed these steps from the intended parents’ perspective in our article, What to Expect From Your Egg Donor’s Cycle. You can learn more about why we conduct these steps at this stage here. These steps help ensure comfort and confidence at every stage.

Legal Agreement

After medical clearance, your legal contract is drafted. This agreement protects your rights and those of the intended parents, covering topics like compensation, anonymity, and the handling of unused eggs or embryos.

Coordination of Appointments & Medications

Once the legal framework is in place, the real planning begins. Your clinic will set a detailed calendar for:

  • Stimulation medications (usually injections to mature eggs)

  • Monitoring visits (ultrasounds and bloodwork)

  • Retrieval scheduling

You’ll be supported every step of the way through your agency. Your Case Manager ensures clarity, timing, and care for every detail.

Egg Retrieval & Recovery

The procedure itself is minimally invasive and typically takes just 20 minutes under light sedation. You’ll be monitored, go home the same day, and take at least two days to rest and recover. Learn all about your retrieval through our Guide to the Egg Retrieval Process here.

We also have a full guide and recovery checklist that covers all you need to know post-procedure, available at the end of our article, What to Expect After Your Egg Retrieval.

What Does the Whole Process Look Like?

From your application to recovery, a typical cycle takes 2-3 months. Coordination is light at first but increases during stimulation and retrieval. Expect to make 3-6 visits to the IVF clinic chosen by the intended parents, based around your schedule.
